Debuting during Sunday Night Football on NBC, the NHL presents its new commerical for the upcoming Winter Classic.
On New Year’s Day, the Winter Classic 2009 will be staged by the NHL at none other than Wrigley Field, outdoors, in Chicago — home of the Chicago Cubs. There’s even talk that President-Elect Obama might stop by for a ballpark frank or two. The hockey game, an actual regular season game, will be between the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.
The ad is pretty smart and really goes after the NHL fan who’s a baseball fan, or just an admirer of professional sports in North America and whatever load of history and nostalgia comes along with that. I shouldn’t have to explain who Harry Caray is to any of those people. On the other hand, it could go either way, I dunno. The patriotic Americans that number among you will either be up in arms or in tears over this one maybe.
Top one NHL.
